Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and a structural component of skin, tendon, cartilage, and bone. Its production declines with age, and that decline accelerates around the menopause transition.
That much is uncontroversial. The question is whether eating collagen does anything about it.
The mechanism question
The intuitive objection is a good one: collagen is a protein, digestion breaks proteins into smaller pieces, and there is no delivery mechanism that routes those pieces preferentially to your face.
The proposed answer is that specific collagen-derived peptides survive digestion, appear in the bloodstream, and may act as signaling molecules rather than raw material — prompting cells to increase their own production.
Skin endpoints
This is where the evidence is strongest, and it is still modest.
Multiple randomized trials report improvements in skin hydration and elasticity over 8–12 weeks. Effect sizes are small, and the outcome measures are frequently instrument-based rather than reflecting changes a person would independently notice.
The consistency across trials is the more persuasive feature. The magnitude is not dramatic.
Joint endpoints
The joint literature is more mixed. The clearer signals appear in exercise-related joint discomfort rather than in established osteoarthritis, where results are inconsistent.
Trial durations are frequently short relative to how slowly joint tissue turns over, which limits what can be concluded either way.
Practical notes
- Studied doses typically fall in the 2.5–10 g per day range
- Trials generally run 8–12 weeks before measuring
- Collagen is an incomplete protein and should not displace higher-quality protein in your total intake
- "Marine" versus "bovine" is a sourcing distinction, not a demonstrated efficacy one
Where this leaves it
Collagen peptides are among the better-studied supplements in the beauty category, with a real if modest evidence base for skin endpoints and a weaker one for joints. That is a more measured conclusion than either the marketing or the backlash tends to offer.
